Yamaha MT-05 Overview
Design and Styling
The upcoming Yamaha MT-05 will follow the design principles of its bigger siblings. It will feature a projector LED headlight with LED DRLs that will give it a fiery front-end look. The air scoops around the sculpted fuel tank of this streetfighter will further enhance its muscular look. Its sculpted fuel tank cover will be designed to fit the rider snugly hence providing better riding dynamics. The MT-05 will be available in three colour options, tech black, icon blue, and cyan storm.
Engine, Gearbox, and Performance
Under the muscular body of this streetfighter will reside a newly-developed 2-cylinder, four-stroke, DOHC engine. This powerplant on the Yamaha MT-05 will come with variable valve actuation and an electronic fuel injection system. Its twin-cylinder motor will get 4-valves per cylinder and it will be liquid-cooled. It will be paired with a 6-speed transmission like the New Kawasaki Ninja 200 that will transfer power to the rear wheels. This streetfighter will also get an assist and slipper clutch that will prevent wheel hop under hard braking. Yamaha MT-05 is expected to produce around 55 hp of peak power and 48 Nm of peak torque.
Chassis, Suspension, and Brakes
It will be based on a lightweight and compact diamond-type frame that will enhance the agility of this streetfighter. Yamaha MT-05 will be fitted with an inverted fork at the front end and a mono-shock absorber with adjustable preload at the rear end. The premium upside-down forks will deliver nimble & stable handling under various riding conditions. Braking duties on the MT-05 will be taken care of by dual hydraulic discs with 4-pot callipers on the front wheel and a single hydraulic disc with a 1-pot calliper on the rear wheels. It will also be equipped with a dual-channel anti-lock braking system as standard.
Features
The Yamaha MT-05 will come with a LED projector headlamp, LED DRLs, LED tail light, and LED turn indicators. It will feature an LCD instrument console with an enhanced and easy-to-read interface. Apart from basic information, its instrument console will also display gear position, temperature, time, engine temperature, and real-time fuel consumption. Yamaha may also equip it with some riding aids like traction control and quickshifter in order to compete against the new-age rivals. Yamaha MT-05 will be fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels like the upcoming 2023 TVS Apache 220 with new-generation radial tubeless tyres.
Yamaha MT-05 Price in India and Launch Date
If the news reports doing rounds on the internet are to be believed, Yamaha is still working on the development of this new 500cc platform. This new project is still in the initial phases of development and the prototype version of this streetfighter may be revealed in the second half of 2023. The MT-05 will be initially launched in a few Asian and western markets only. The Yamaha MT-05 price in India is pegged to be around Rs 4.80 Lakh (ex-showroom price).
Rivals
The 500cc streetfighter segment is not quite populated and the buyers have very limited options to choose from. The upcoming Yamaha MT-05 will be competing with the Honda CB500F, Kawasaki Z400, and Benelli 502C. With the kind of performance figures and specs sheet we are expecting, the MT-05 should easily dominate the 500cc segment. Also, if the brand manages to price it competitively, it will turn out to be one of the best options in this segment.
Our Verdict on the Yamaha MT-05
The surge in the demand for middleweight streetfighters is evident and a lot of brands are entering this segment with new launches. The upcoming MT-05 will help Yamaha regain its lost position in the mid-capacity segment. This streetfighter will boast a powerful twin-cylinder motor that will be able to deliver an exciting and engaging performance. We expect it to come with high-quality components and boast the same level of fit & finish as its bigger siblings. We have high hopes for the Yamaha MT-05, with its sleek new-gen design and impressive spec sheet it will manage to woo riders looking to upgrade to middleweight bikes.
