Yamaha YZF-R2 Overview

Design and Styling

The upcoming Yamaha YZF-R2 will reflect the R-DNA in its design inspired by the MotoGP machine, YZR-M1. An aerodynamic fully faired design with smooth body panels will enable this supersport to achieve optimal airflow management. It will feature a bi-functional LED headlight unit with sleek LED position lamps that will give it a commanding front end. A wing will be fitted on the side panels that will help it generate downforce. It will come with a sculpted fuel tank design with an edgy tank cover which will enhance the riding dynamics on race tracks. This supersport will feature a compact and sleek tail section that will integrate well with its overall design. The Yamaha YZF-R2 will most likely come in three colour options along with a Monster Energy MotoGP Edition variant.

Engine, Gearbox, and Performance

Yamaha will equip this new supersport with a 200cc single-cylinder, four-stroke, four-valve engine with a double overhead camshaft. The Yamaha YZF-R2 will use an electronic fuel injection system for the fuel supply. Its liquid-cooled engine will come with a variable valve actuation (VVA) system that will ensure it delivers consistent power and torque across the rev band. It will be mated to a constant mesh 6-speed transmission with a quick shifter which will allow clutch-less shifting of gears. This supersport is expected to produce around 24 hp of max power and 18.5 Nm of peak torque. Yamaha YZF-R2 will also get an assist and slipper clutch system that will maintain appropriate engine braking and also provide smooth downshifts. It will also allow the rider to choose between two riding modes.

Suspension and Brakes

The Yamaha YZF-R2 will come with a high-performance suspension system which will be designed to suit its sporty riding characteristics. It will be equipped with a 37 mm invited telescopic suspension at the front end. At the rear end, it will feature a link-type monocross shock absorber with adjustable preload. The high-end inverted forks on this supersport will provide rigidity and stability while taking on the tight corners on a race track. Yamaha YZF-R2 will be fitted with a 282 mm disc brake on the front wheel and a 220 mm disc brake on the rear wheel. It will also get a dual-channel anti-lock braking system like the Yamaha MT-05. Its braking system will provide excellent stopping power and control to the rider.

Chassis and Dimensions

The Yamaha YZF-R2 will be built on a lightweight deltabox frame. Its chassis will be optimized to achieve a low centre of gravity and efficient weight distribution. The lightweight and rigid frame of this supersport will provide excellent stability and nimble handling. It will also get an aluminium swingarm that will help in significant weight reduction leading to improved manoeuvrability. This supersport will come with a clip-on handlebar & rear-set footpegs that will provide the rider with an engaging & sporty riding posture. It will come with an 11 litres large fuel tank which should provide it with a decent riding range. The Yamaha YZF-R2 will be equipped with 17-inch lightweight & durable aluminium alloy wheels. It will be fitted with high-performance radial and tubeless tyres that will provide excellent grip and stability.

If you are a gizmo-geek then this new Yamaha sports bike will surely excite you. The Yamaha YZF-R2 will be loaded with a wide range of segment-first tech features. It will feature an advanced fully digital LCD instrument console with smartphone connectivity. Apart from basic information, its instrument cluster will also display average speed, coolant temperature, average mileage, battery power, and lap time. After pairing with Y-Connect App, the instrument cluster will display call alerts, SMS & Email alert, and phone battery level status. It will also get an in-built side-stand engine cut-off switch like the Apache RTR 220. The Yamaha YZF-R2 will get a split-horn system that will deliver higher decibels and lower decibels.

Riding Aids

Yamaha will equip this entry-level sports bike with a slew of riding aids and safety features that will enhance the riding experience and provide greater safety. It will come with an assist and slipper clutch that helps in maintaining stability and control during aggressive downshifts. A uni-directional quick-shifter will allow the rider to up-shifts gears without using the clutch. A quick-shifter provides smoother gear shifts and it is quite useful when you are riding on the race track. Yamaha YZF-R2 will come with a traction control system that will help regulate power delivery to reduce the risk of wheel spin.

Yamaha YZF-R2 Price in India and Launch Date

Japanese motorcycle giant, Yamaha has already filed for the trademark of YZF-R2 in several countries around the world. Going by Yamaha’s naming pattern, the trademark suggests that the brand is working on a new 200cc supersport bike. The reports from the automobile industry suggest that the Yamaha YZF-R2 is in the initial stages of development. It might take a year or two before the brand comes with the production-ready model of this bike. Yamaha will have to design and develop the 200cc pattern from scratch which may take quite some time. The price of Yamaha YZF-R2 in India is expected to start at Rs 2.10 Lakh (ex-showroom). Yamaha may also launch a Monster Energy MotoGP edition of this supersport which will be priced slightly higher than the standard model.

Rivals

The entry-level supersport segment in India is very competitive with a wide range of models from top brands vying for customers’ attention. The Yamaha YZF-R2 will be competing against the KTM RC 200, Bajaj Pulsar RS 200, Suzuki Gixxer SF 250, and Hero XTreme 200S. Kawasaki is also coming up with a 200cc superport named the Ninja 200, which will be one of the major rivals of the YZF-R2. In terms of pricing, this Yamaha supersport will be positioned among the premium offerings in this segment with the likes of the KTM RC 200 & Suzuki Gixxer SF 250. If the Yamaha YZF-R2 is priced competitively, it may turn out to be as successful as its smaller 150cc sibling.

Our Verdict on the Yamaha YZF-R2

The news about a possible 200cc supersport has got all the Yamaha fans excited. The YZF-R2 will be based on an all-new platform but will carry on the R-series DNA derived from its bigger siblings. It will be powered by a single-cylinder engine with liquid cooling and fuel injection. Its motor will be tuned to deliver solid power & torque in the low and mid-range of the rev band. A lightweight chassis combined with a high-end suspension system will help this supersport attain agile handling and engaging riding dynamics. Yamaha will equip it with a range of riding aids and safety features that will boost the rider’s confidence and enhance the riding experience. The Yamaha YZF-R2 seems like a complete entry-level supersport on paper and we hope it turns into a reality soon.
